More About February Birthstone

Amethyst is one of those stones almost everyone recognizes. Purple quartz. But when you see a really good natural cluster, it suddenly feels very different from the small polished stones people usually imagine.
The name comes from the Greek word meaning “not intoxicated.” Ancient Greeks believed amethyst could keep the mind clear and focused. They even carved drinking vessels from it. A little optimistic maybe. Still a good story.
Historically amethyst became associated with wisdom and spirituality. Bishops wore it. Philosophers admired it. Something about the color makes people think of reflection and quiet thought.
People born in February often have that kind of personality. Thoughtful. Creative. Sometimes a little introspective.
In nature amethyst usually forms inside volcanic cavities. Slowly growing crystals. Thousands of years. Sometimes millions. When the rock is opened you get these incredible purple crystal interiors. Entire geodes filled with points of light.
Brazil and Uruguay produce many of the big ones collectors know today.
